20 Beholding
The Statement of the first hexagram
Behold! The hands have been washed,
but the offering has not yet been made.
Be sincere and dignified in appearance.
The changing lines
The first line:
Childish beholding is not wrong
for a common person, but it is wrong
for a superior person.
The fourth line:
Beholding our nation's glory:
make good use
of an audience with the king.
25 Innocence
The Statement of the second hexagram
Innocence: from the first, all must be
pervasive, gainful, and pure.
Those without such truth suffer calamity
and do not gain no matter where they go.
The Image of the first hexagram
The wind moving above
the earth: beholding.
The ancient kings
inspected the provinces
and territories to establish
the right teachings.
The Image of the second hexagram
Thunder moves
under heaven: all the world
is innocent. The ancient
kings paid close attention
to the time
in nourishing
the myriad things.
