9 Smallness Tames
The Statement of the first hexagram
Smallness tames. Persevere.
Dense clouds, no rain
at my western border.
The changing lines
The fourth line:
Have confidence. Bloodletting is past,
alarm has gone. No fault.
The sixth line:
Rain is done, all is in place. Respect and virtue
are full. Yet a woman's chastity is imperiled.
When the moon is nearly full,
the prince attacks: misfortune.
43 Decisiveness
The Statement of the second hexagram
Decisiveness. Proclaim in the royal court.
Trust in the commands. Be stern.
There will be severity.
Announce to your own city.
There is no gain in going to war.
Gain by having a place to go.
The Image of the first hexagram
Wind moving high
in heaven: smallness tames.
The noble one acts
with restraint, culture,
and morals.
The Image of the second hexagram
Lake rising to heaven:
decisiveness. The noble one
bestows wealth
to those below
and shuns dwelling
on his own virtues.
