30 Brilliance
The Statement of the first hexagram
Brilliance. Gainful purity.
Continue.
Tame the bull: fortune.
The changing lines
The third line:
Brilliance sets with the sun.
Do not drum on a crock with your singing.
When great elders' sighs come:
misfortune.
The fourth line:
This abrupt arrival is like a blaze
that flares and dies, then is forgotten.
The sixth line:
The king goes to battle.
Admirably, he humbles the chieftains
and captures vile rebels. No fault.
24 Returning
The Statement of the second hexagram
Returning. Continue.
In coming and going,
there is neither sickness nor distress.
Companions come without fault.
Returning is its Tao.
In seven days, returning comes.
Gain by having a place to go.
The Image of the first hexagram
Brightness doubled:
brilliance. The great person
spreads his brilliance
to illuminate
all four directions.
The Image of the second hexagram
Thunder in the center of
the earth: returning.
The ancient kings
closed the borders
during the solstices.
Traveling merchants
did not journey. Sovereigns
did not tour the provinces.
