53 Gradually
The Statement of the first hexagram
A woman marries: fortune.
Gainful purity.
The changing lines
The second line:
Wild swans gradually reach the boulder.
Drinking and eating in bliss. Fortune.
The third line:
Wild swans gradually reach the shore.
A man journeys but does not return. A wife,
pregnant; does not give birth. Misfortune.
Gain by guarding against raiders.
The fifth line:
Wild swans gradually reach the hill.
Three years: a wife cannot conceive.
At the end of twilight: success. Fortune.
4 Youth
The Statement of the second hexagram
A youth must be steadfast.
I do not seek the naive youth.
The naive youth seeks me.
At the first divination, I explain,
but after three times, it is irritating.
Annoyed, I explain no further.
Nevertheless, a gainful omen.
The Image of the first hexagram
Wood on the mountain:
gradually.
The noble one dwells
in high moral character
and reforms
popular customs.
The Image of the second hexagram
A spring gushes
below a mountain:
the naive youth.
The noble one nourishes virtue
with determination.
