4 Youth

The Statement of the first hexagram

A youth must be steadfast.

I do not seek the naive youth.

The naive youth seeks me.

At the first divination, I explain,

but after three times, it is irritating.

Annoyed, I explain no further.

Nevertheless, a gainful omen.

The changing lines

The fourth line:
A distressed and naive youth:

sorrow.
The sixth line:
Nothing is gained by beating a youth.

That is the way to treat raiders.

We gain by preventing misdeeds.

40 Releasing

The Statement of the second hexagram

Gain in the west and south.
No cause to move forward-
then comes return, and fortune.
To have a place to go: dawn fortune.

The Image of the first hexagram

A spring gushes
below a mountain:
the naive youth.
The noble one nourishes virtue
with determination.

The Image of the second hexagram

Thunder and rain act:
releasing.
The noble one
pardons errors
and forgives offenses.
