7 Armies

The Statement of the first hexagram

Armies must be steadfast.
With a great leader
they will find fortune.
They must remain without fault.

The changing lines

The third line:
The armies might cart corpses:
misfortune.
The fifth line:
There are birds in the field. Catch them!
No fault when the eldest one
commands armies, but if it is a trainee-
carts of corpses and pure misfortune.

48 Well

The Statement of the second hexagram

Well. A city may change,

but the well does not.

It does not lose, it does not gain.

In spite of all who come and go from a well,

it remains a well.

But if the rope cannot reach,

or if the well's vase is upended:_

misfortune.

The Image of the first hexagram

The earth's center
is filled with water.
The noble one supports
the people and cares for
everyone.

The Image of the second hexagram

Wood above water: well.
The noble one encourages
the people and lends them
assistance.
