I was seeing if this Living I Ching computerized consult would expand or validate an answer I received from a yarrow stalk consult. This answer validates even more clearly what I had determined from the yarrow stalk consult. I'm really thinking this computer method does work, though I can't understand how.

I've discovered the 8th moon's western 2010 date is Sept. 22 (providing the web search was correct). I keep feeling there's a health event involved here, despite my question is regarding finances and the changing results. Does the 2nd changing line cancel the statement re misfortune? Does changing to 24 mean whatever kind of misfortune is no matter, as all will be well? Hmmm. Oh well, I'm new to this teaching, and I've satisfied my curiosity for now. After all, if I can't interpret the statements for my situation, all is meaningless. So far, I can't see the teaching being harmful, though, as I found that for myself, TAROT and "Sensitive Psychic" consultation WAS harmful, in that I made unwise decisions based on those consults. Perhaps even with I Ching, one could consult too much, or with wrong interpretation make unwise choices? Yet how would one learn it, if not posing relevant important questions for guidance, and why do it if not following the guidance? I'm going to study all my previous answers to a handful of questions I've consulted on. That should keep me plenty busy. I do like this site, and perhaps I'll return with a question and/or comments later this year.

A coins consult March 29 had given me the 14/54. As the question concerned finances, I was hoping that 54 was just a cautionary statement for me not to fall victim to getting involved in a bad relationship, which I have been inclined to do. As I feel sure I've been totally cured from such desires, I was hoping 54 was just a reminder. Knowing I will not get involved in such a way, I'm satisfied with the answer, 19/24, thanking heaven for the 2nd line.

Also, somehow my first comment didn't take, I guess. Anyway, what I first shared was: I wasn't convinced that consulting the I Ching via computer would be valid. So first I asked the question using my usual physical method, coins, and then asked the question here, and amazingly, 57 is what my coins method result, 16, changes to. I have only asked via this site one other time, and that answer, too, was what my physical coins method had shown as changing to. Hmmm.

This situation is working out. So the "regrets vanish" part of Hexagram 57, line 5 is working out. I was not sure why Hexagram 18, Poison appeared. It usually refers to a poisoned situation or illness. Wilhelm called this "work on what has been spoiled." But that is not the case here. Hexagram 18 turned out to be manifested because it was revealed that V's daughter has a chronic illness. I never expected that, but I believe that fulfills Hexagram 18.

Recently, I learned that B's mother is nearly completely recovered. So in terms of this hexagram, I would say that the decisiveness was the necessary and immediate medical attention. "There will be severity," was obviously a reference to the illness and the suffering. One might even see relevance in "bestows wealth to those below" because the wound was in the lower part of the body.

Recently, I learned that B's mother was out of the hospital and coming home. B flew back home to care for his mother and to help her get settled. His father is elderly and not up to moving or situating his wife, so it makes sense for B to go back home."Proclaim in the royal court," and "Announce to your own city," here means preparing the family. "Gain by having a place to go," means going home. I take it that "not dwelling on his own virtues" means that B should humbly lend himself to the situation and serve with out any though of gain. That's just what he's doing.

I was puzzled when I got this reading. Ultimately, this person did not work out. Pit upon pit usually signifies danger, so perhaps I have been lucky that the dangers of this double pit have been avoided. There is a central core lesson: when things don't go our way, as was the case here, the advice is always to keep one's own dignity and character: "tether your heart," "moves with constant virtue," and "repeatedly teaches the critical matters," all show that if we stay with our core values there will never be regret over a disappointing outcome.

B's mother is undergoing a health crisis and is in the hospital. She is undergoing emergency surgery and may well need more surgery in the immediate future. I have urged B to travel back home and take care of his mother. The fact that this is an unchanging hexagram means that the situation will not change. This hexagram promises neither good nor bad fortune. It does say that immediate action is necessary, which tallies with the swift medical intervention that is required. "There will be severity" is certainly an understatement. And "announce to your own city," certainly is a reference to the rallying together of the family necessary. The image of "bestowing wealth on those below" is an allusion to the aid that is now necessary to secure through generosity, and it is time for others in the family to put their own interests aside for the mother's sake.

This is a subject that has preoccupied me for many decades, and it's a question often put to me. I've never formally asked this question of the I Ching, thinking that it was virtually a rhetorical question: of course the point of using the I Ching is mastery, so why ask? Yet I was surprised and delighted at this answer because it is one I never would have considered. The answer is in keeping perfectly with what I've studied of the I Ching, and still it takes the meaning deeper. Mastering something means joining. It means joining the ranks of other masters (I'm reminded of the guild systems and how one earns one's way from journeyman to master), but it also means joining the overall tradition of the art one is struggling with. "Those who are not sure" can never be masters—so I take that as a reassurance to keep going. The third line means one can master many things—even bad, and one can master the wrong things. Power and intelligence are neutral: it's the soul of the person directing the actions that matters. In that sense, the second hexagram, Humility, is crucial. Once mastery is attained, only the humble will bring things to completion. Or, viewed another way, only the humble can finally become masters. The I Ching even says how to do this: by founding nations—that is, staking out an area of mastery, and by keeping close ties with others—that is, learning from others and exchanging experiences with them. The fifth line means not to force things: the imperious use beaters, the ordinary citizen does not need such coercion. Mastery isn't just skill, it's also being creative. "Citizens need no such coercion" means not to force things. Every person will find different "birds" on their hunt and we should accept what falls into our nets.

I was practicing Taiji and reflecting on how constant criticism was in my life. Not only is there constant criticism in a Taiji class, but as an artist, criticism has been constant in art classes and it is a daily reality in professional contexts too. The essence of studying the I Ching, as well as every Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucianist art, is self-improvement. But there is no self-improvement without trying to remedy shortcomings, and there is no remedying shortcomings without criticism. Self-criticism is never enough. Subconsciously, one will always protect core weaknesses (although, oddly enough, subconscious suppression shows that there must first be awareness). So I take heart in this reading from the I Ching. Returning is a reminder that there is a Dao, a way, that is right for each of us, and that to live naturally is to live in concert with that way. To have faults is to deviate from that way. To improve, in this case, through criticism, is to return to one's own natural way. The image of returning to the way is combined with the well. The well is at once immovable and yet it is constantly changing with the replenishment of fresh water. That is the deeper reward of being on the right way: to be in touch with a constant and sustaining source. There is a concluding warning in the phrase, "if the rope cannot reach." Again, if through negligence and the ignoring of criticism one's shortcomings keep one from the deeper source, only misfortune can result.
